prototype / MULTI UNIT
SECOND SEMESTER
studio : HILARY SAMPLE
prototype creates a complex, circulation route embedded within a simple rectangular envelope. The formal result from the exterior is not complicated, but the spatial labyrinth on the interior is. Instead of direct routes connecting specific programmatic notes, circulation winds its way around volumes, expanding the actual time it would take to travel from one point to the next. Prototype slows down the experience of space, forcing the inhabitant to succumb to the architecture.
multiunit takes the original prototype developed over the previous 2 weeks and re-imagines 5 units spread across a site in New Haven. Rather than multiply the same unit, rotating it or mirroring it to diversity space, multiunit brings the units together, and wraps them. The longitudinal nature of the buildings is counteracted by the horizontality of the skin that surrounds them. This collision forces the units to change, and mutate. Consequently, the result is 5 different types of units that shift both in plan and elevation. The exterior cladding is polycarbonate, allowing for light at night to glow through the translucent surface
